The IGCC (Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle) power plant, property of ELCOGAS, S.A., at Puertollano in the province of Ciudad Real, is the largest in the world (335 MWeISO ) using solid fuel. It is based on European technology and allows the combined cycle gas turbine to be supplied with syngas (IGCC operating mode) or natural gas (NGCC operating mode).
The power station consists of three main units, the gasification unit (which generates the syngas), the air separation unit (producing oxygen and nitrogen) and the combined cycle unit (which produces electricity). All of them are fully integrated, what allows the obtainance of high efficiency.
