ELCOGAS is a public limited company, established in 1992 with the aim of building and operating a 335 MWeISO Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power plant, as well as the comercialization of its technology.
Located in Puertollano in the province of Ciudad Real, it is based on the PRENFLO gasification process which gets clean and efficient energy from a mixture of local coal (from ENCASUR) -with a high ash content- and petroleum coke -produced at REPSOL YPF local refinery-.
The solid wastes (sulphur, ash and slag) obtained during the production and cleaning of the synthesis gas are marketable, making them by-products which can be used on the market. In addition, pollutant emissions are minimum, lower than the most demanding Spanish and European emission limits. Finally, the high efficiency of this power plant, 15% better than the average obtained by other conventional thermal power stations, allows considerable reduction of CO2 emissions and water consumption.
The power station began into commercial operation with Natural Gas Combined Cycle (NGCC) technology in 1996, and did so with Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) on March, 1998.
ELCOGAS S.A., which belongs to the main European utilities, is the first power plant in Spain demonstrating the integrated gasification combined cycle technology and the largest in the world using coal.
